A forbidden fruit a day...

The apple has long had an iconic effect. The symbolic weight of this one fruit—holding stories of love, sexuality, health, gravity (Newton!), computers, etc—spans many western mythological traditions. Even the term “wormhole” in astrophysics has its origin in the worms that burrow through apples.

The apple in fairy tales is also very well known (Snow White being the primary) thanks to the many variations of apples in the plots of Grimm brothers’ tales. Some Celtic legends about Cromac mac Airt, a legendary King of Ireland, “had a silver branch that bore three golden apples and that made music to soothe the sick”. And the therapeutic properties of the apple even come up in The Arabian Nights where the scent of a magical apple brought from Samarkand by Prince Ahmad cures patients, including a princess, naturally.

Enjoy a crisp bite, my dears!
