Crawfish Season

It’s peak crawfish season, folks.

I’m not a fan of them myself, having worked in a neuropsychology lab in college were I got far too acquainted with these little ones (they had names like Mr. Smee and Captain Hook!) But I took this photo for @thebywaterca a few days ago and wanted to share it with a special story! According to the #Chitimacha Tribe of Louisiana, the Great Spirit placed the land underwater, hiding the earth everywhere. In order to get the land above the water, the Great Spirit told the crawfish to dive to the bottom of the water and bring up mud to the surface, to make earth. As soon as crawfish had done this, the Great Spirit made humans. The Spirit called the land and humans “Chitimaca”.

This story is particularly special today because the Chitimaca Tribe of #Louisiana are the *only* tribe in Louisiana to still occupy a part of their aboriginal homeland.

This story and post come in part from their website, chitimacha.gov.
