Coffeehouses
But first, coffeehouses.
The city of Constantinople (now Istanbul) has the honor of hosting the site of the first coffeehouse, back in 1475. When the Turks invaded Vienna, they brought bags of coffee with them. When they left, coffee was deemed one of the spoils of war, and soon came the crowd pleasing additions of cream and sugar. The coffeehouse began to flourish as a center of business and politics, and spread to England, where the term "tips" was first used in a coffeehouse as an invitation of gratitude.
